Diabetes Mellitus occurs when your dog has inadequate production of insulin or an abnormal response to insulin that produces resistance to its effects. Most dogs suffer from type I diabetes, or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, which is readily corrected by administration of insulin. Uncomplicated diabetes mellitus results in increased thirst and urinations, increased appetite, weight loss, muscle atrophy, and can cause acute onset of cataracts resulting in blindness. More severe, complicated diabetes, can result in ketoacidotic acidosis which can result in vomiting, decreased appetite, weakness, seizures, coma and even death.

Treatment is highly recommended. Please contact us if you have further questions.
