Oxalate crystals are concerning as they can form into stones that must be surgically removed as they cannot be medically dissolved. They can however be medically prevented with diet and by keeping the urine concentration lower. The best way to prevent calcium oxalate crystals from forming is to dilute the urine on a regular basis, feed a diet lower in calcium and oxalates, and feed a diet that creates a neutral pH in the urine. Hill's U/D is a special diet that meets all of these requirements. This diet comes in canned and dry forms and is sold in our Pet Nutrition Center next door to our hospital.
