Dental care is an important part of your pet's overall health. Dental disease poses a serious threat to your pet's health and regular cleanings are an important part of prevention.
Non-anesthetic dentals allow us to scrape and polish your pet's teeth both inside and out, above and below the gumline, without the need for anesthesia. This is especially beneficial to older pets, pets with kidney disease, and any other pet that might not tolerate anesthesia.
Most pets will allow this procedure, even ones that do not like to have their mouths touched. A technician will sit at eye level with the pet and will hold the pet gently but firmly, so as to maintain control but also to keep the pet calm and comfortable.
Your pet will be approached slowly and gently, with patience. Like a dentist working with a young child, the dental technician will work to gain your pet's trust and will then thoroughly clean the teeth.
The majority of pets could benefit from a non-anesthetic dental cleaning, but it is not always the best option. Pets with severe dental disease, including cavities, severe gingivitis, loose or fractured teeth, abscesses or stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous lining of the mouth), etc. would not be good candidates.
Broadway Veterinary Hospital currently offers 20 minute appointments on the second Thursday of each month. Please contact us at 206-322-5444 if you would like to schedule a non-anesthetic dental cleaning or to receive an estimate. (Please note that all pets will need to have a current exam before having a non-anesthetic dental cleaning.)
