Optimal Socialization Period and Fear Socialization Period
The optimal time for a puppy to be placed into a new home is between 6 and 8 weeks of age. At this age, the puppy has received the mothering it needs, and has learned about compassionate care. They are well on their way to becoming well-versed in the canine social world, and they are now ready to start the main course in learning to speak "human". Separating from their litter of origin is a difficult thing for puppies, and can be very frightening for the puppy. If this transition period is postponed to the time between 8 and 10 weeks of age, the puppy is into his Fear Socialization period. During this period, traumatic and fear-producing experiences may leave a permanent impression. Therefore, scary things such as the first car ride, and being introduced to the resident cat in the household are best done before the fear socialization period. If a puppy is brought home for the first time between 8 and 10 weeks of age, it is important to work hard to minimize the scary things, and when they do occur, to model an upbeat and happy, no big deal, and non-emotional response for your dog. Happy talk to your puppy in a high pitched and sing-song type of voice, because this style of communication speaks to your puppy's genetic soul and will uplift his spirits.
Fear is most strongly imprinted during the 8 to 10 week age range if pain is involved. This is why we will do everything in our power to make the veterinary visit during this time as pain-free as possible, and we will wait to place your puppy's microchip until your next visit.
