Collecting your pet's urine for lab testing
For the dog:
Urine should be collected from the middle of the urine stream
into the urine cup avoiding plant material and hair as much as
possible. The first urine of the day is generally the most concentrated
and the most representative of how well the kidneys are able to
function, and if crystals are being made at any point during the day.
For very small dog's we try to supply vaccine trays on an "as available
basis" to aid in urine collection. These are very shallow trays that
our vaccine comes in, they arrive sterile, so are very clean and provide
a good tool to aid in collection of urine for a very small dog. Urine undergoes many changes rapidly after it leaves the body so having it analyzed as soon
as possible after collection is best, please submit the sample as soon
as you are able after collection so we may get it in process in the
laboratory.
Complete Urinalysis
USPG USPG & Multistick Multistick Use the urine cup to catch a clean mid stream sample of your
dog's urine. Please submit the sample as soon as possible after
collection.
For the cat using No-Sorb:
Instructions: You have received a cup of No-sorb kitty litter. Please follow these instructions:
Line your current litter box with plastic or use a brand new
litter box. The reason for this is that any soap residue from a box that
has been washed will significantly alter the pH of the urine.
Place the No-sorb granules in the box, without any other litter.
Pour the urine into the No-sorb container (try to get the No-sorb granules into the cup as well).
The best results are obtained if you can return the urine within
1/2 hour. Otherwise keep the container in the refrigerator for no
longer than 8 hours prior to testing.
