Dental disease is a serious threat to cats and dogs.

Like people, pets need preventative dental care.  Dental disease can increase the risk of heart and kidney disease in pets and can be quite painful. Just think back to your last toothache!

Did you know? All animals could benefit from dental care.

  • Over 85% of cats and dogs over the age of 4 in the United States are affected by periodontal disease.

  • Every time your pet chews, bacteria enter the blood stream, “showering” the liver, kidneys, heart, joints and other tissues with infection.  Over time, this can irreversibly damage these organs.

  • Your dog shouldn't have "doggy breath." 95% of bad breath is due to plaque, tartar and poor dental health.

  • Pets often hide their discomfort. Your only indicator of a problem may be a reluctance to eat a hard snack or bad breath.  Or, your pet may just seem a little "off."

  •   Diabetes causes increased blood glucose (sugar) which causes secretions, such as saliva, to have increased glucose which in turn allow for growth of bacteria in the mouth.  Diabetes also causes reduced immunity and infections of the gums are common.

  • Pets that commonly chew hard things - rocks, bones, fences, doors, gates, etc. - are also at increased risk for dental disease.

Prevention is the Best Medicine
A pretty kitty.
  • The best option is to brush your pet's teeth on a regular basis.  We know this sounds intimidating, but we believe that it can easily and quickly become a part of your routine.
  • Click here to read detailed instructions on how you can start this important part of your pet's health care and click here to see a video demonstration.

  • A great complement to teeth-brushing are dental diets.  Depending on your pet's age and other health issues, this may be a great option for you and your pet.  Feel free to visit our store or talk to a member of our staff to help you choose the right diet.

  • Depending upon your pet's dental health, age, and general health. A doctor may recommend a dental cleaning. During this procedure, we clean above and below the gumlines, helping to treat and prevent dental disease, including bone loss and body-wide infections.  We perform dental cleanings both with and without anesthesia; please ask a member of our staff for more details!
Please contact us if you have any further questions.  At Broadway Veterinary Hospital, we are here to help you with dental health, routine exams and vaccinations, flea control, surgery (with the option of laser) and more. Please let us know how we can be of service to you and your pet!

Are you coming home to this?
