Flea Control

Fleas are easy to kill but difficult to control. We know how frustrating this can be. We are here to help!

  • Treat Your Pet:  This is important both for prevention and for treatment.  The A cat curled up in a basket. Flea control is important even for cats that do not go outside.Pacific Northwest has one of the world's largest flea populations.

  • Treat the Environment: Fleas do not spend their entire lives on your pet. If you have a flea problem, it is important to treat your house/apartment and yard.  

  • Treat All Pets: In order to avoid failures and resistance, it is important to treat all pets in the household.




Treating Your Pet:

  • There are lots of great products on the market that are safe and effective for the prevention and control of flea infestations. 

  • Topical adulticides are one option.  The use of these products alone is tempting, but rotation and a combination of products should still be used to delay resistance.
     
  • Insect growth regulating products: These products are not pesticides, rather they control fleas by interrupting the flea's reproductive cycle.
    • For prevention use one of these products all year around.  For control of a severe infestation use an animal contact product (such as Frontline (R)) and the Knockout Spray (see below).
      • Program (R) is a once a month pill or a once every six-month injection.

Treating the Environment:

  • This is especially important in cases of severe infestation or in situations where there is a flea-allergicA puppy in a very stylish pet bed. animal.

  • Inside it is especially important to vacuum. Vacuum in every nook and cranny. Use every attachment you have. It is especially important to get to the places fleas like to live: under furntire, behind doors, etc.

  • Don't forget the furniture!

  • Throw the vacuum bag away outside.

  • After vacuuming, you can use Knock-out Premise Spray(R). This product kills fleas for one month and then stops them from reproducing for six months. (For more information on how to prepare your house, please see our Flea Control Handout.)

  • Another option is Fleabusters(R) or 206-628-3532. They use a borate powder which is beaten into your carpets and is guaranteed for a year. You can do it yourself or have them do it for you!
